Sometimes a reviewer has to resist the temptation to just say a cd is awesome and leave it at that, and this is one cd I'm tempted not to explain too much, where I just want to say 'Listen to it, you'll like it'. | This isn't 'standard viking' or folk metal with harsh screams, alternated with clean male and female vocals, and electric alternated with acoustic guitars and flutes. That is to say, it actually is all that, but you can't compare this with say Bathory, Thyrfing or Einherjer (3 totally uncomparable bands). However, this is pretty much like average folk, with the above-mentioned elements. Confused yet? Well it's kinda like Sonata Arctica, who didn't do anything terribly innovating, but is nonetheless caried on hands by their fans because they do such a solid and damn good job and not being innovative. The sound of Adorned Brood is a new sound, but it's nowhere near breaking new grounds. Take for example the first song, 'Welcome Our Friends'. Not exactly a standard name, starts with flutes mixed with acoustic guitars, in a playfull melody for almost a minute, when the 'real' guitars come in, after which the friendly-sounding male vocals come in which ends in 'black vox', and then the soft female vocals come in for the refrain. Nothing that hasn't been done before, even in that combination. But when around 3:30 the heavy bassy guitarriffs kick in I start banging my head softly, and then the 25- second twin-guitar solo makes me apreciate the refrain that's repeated afterwards a *lot* more. I could sum up the cd like this: standard, but damn solid. Very varied cd, varied in and between songs, though not that terribly much. A bit surprising lyrics now and then. Vocals are damn good. Not per se the black vox, but the clean vox are particularly soothing (especially combined with a headbanging riff like on say Erdenkraft). Not really viking-metal, but more folk-metal. The vocal lines are pleasant, especially because they're sung with feeling. And now and then a surprising guitar-solo that really completes the song. Some times soft, some times heavy. Another recommended song is Der Fluch; where the singer seems to curse his fate. I like. 86/100 Review by: Egregius
