Shit!
This must be the worst thing I have ever heard. This has nothing to do with the black metal genre.
Stupidly and fake epic. Absurdly melodic and happy. So happy that it often reminds of some sort of circuss background music but combined with ridiculous black metal-ish rasps.
Total fucking bullshit...
Damn these British with their cheesy stuff(their doom metal is another thing).
This band bares comparison only with fucking CoF.
Maybe the 4th song has something to it.
Fake imaginery of powerful steel-wrapped kings with axes and something about cosmic winds or something like that.
Damn, how can people like that stuff?

Don't listen to the other reviewer. Bal-Sagoth may not play the "true" black metal style he obviously was expecting, but they have never tried to play that sort of music anyway. Calling Bal-Sagoth black metal at all seems wrong in my ears. The only thing that is directly connected to any sort of black metal trademark is Byron's orcish vocals. If you look at their first album, which is more or less a pure death metal album, they haven't changed all that much (if you look away from the vocals and the pompous keyboards). Therefore, calling them a black metal band is utter nonsense. The keyboards are "happy", yes, but it fits Bal-Sagoth's consept perfectly.

(sorry, I just can't stand reviewers who can't review albums for what they are, rather than what they want it to be, or expecting it to be)

Anyway, this album continues in the same vein as it's predecessor, with enormous keyboard arrangements throughout. If you're new to Bal-Sagoth, this is the album you should listen to first. It's the B-S album thats easiest to get into (not shortening down on it's longevity though), and gives you a fair introduction to their exciting fantasy universe. I don't regard it to be their best album, but it has some of my all time favorite Bal-Sagoth songs. Recommended!

BLODU OK JARNA! (hehe)

This album is a bad joke. Was it made by musicians or by their children?. Poor sound quality and total lack of talent.

jesus!!!!! you idiot, just because they does'nt play the music you like, does'nt meen they don't have talent, moron.... bal-sagoth make great music, and nobody ever said that they play black metal ether, helhammer, so why don't you shut up... if you people don't like the music, why do you listen to it... in a review, you are supposed to stick to the case, not wondering of the track with your own oppinions...

How people can complain about poor sound quality is to me a mystery. The album has a fine production and there is nothing wrong with the sound. Bal-Sagoth's music is for the open minded person, they play a special type of metal that at first can sound a little bit strange. Symphonic "fantasy" metal with both "clean" (actually talking) and black metal vocal. This is so far one of my favourite albums from this group. Don't expect black metal, that is all i can say. And if you don't like it, give it a chanse (something many black metallers won't do) Enjoy!

Goodness me - how many people are getting excited about whether Bal Sagoth is really black metal, death metal, circus metal, pompous British symphonic metal....?

Let's put the matter to bed - this is a fine, taltented band who have something of a unique sound - elements of black metal rasp mix with uplifting and 'cheerful' keyboards, combined with fantasy inspired song-writing. Subjects for the later stretch from ancient Atlantis to the barbarian hordes, from warriors seeking glory and honour on heroic quests to intergalatic war.

None of which matters a whit when you consider that the overall effect is bombastic music, symphonic and grandiose songs and lyrics that put many short stories to shame.

This is just fantastic metal, played with heart and passion.

The only slight complaint I would have is that over latter albums there has been a bit of 'sameiness' that the band would (and could) challenge themsevles a bit to overcome.

Album number 6 is due in early 2005 I believe, so be open minded and give these guys a chance - well worth the effort!

There is something magical in BAL-SAGOTH,not only the music but the whole consept is rather dreamy than gloomy, thats why some people describe them as happy-metal or whatever. The music is symphonic-epic-battle metal.I am listening to BAL-SAGOTH when i need to escape somehow from reality , and thanks to bands like BAL-SAGOTH i am doing it very succesfully.Good music but not for everyone, not for every moment, not for everyday.
