obrygatory to any black metal fan

Review by: Sad spirit

Last Wisdom from this album is the first black metal song that I heard and it immediately captured my senses.
Extremely great. Captures the feelings and pain caused by life as it is nowadays.
What you hear is something beyond music, this is a philosophy that I will always adore and seek.

i heard so many things about burzum and then i heard this one and i think it really suck, the production its horrible and the songs are long and boring, after the 2nd song i was trying to stand it but it was imposible,i think this mother fucking nazi have a better life in jail,as a musician he suck..hail blasphemy + beherit

This is the first BURZUM cd i ever grabbed and it stands out like a relic of black metal in my collection. Atmospheric to the max, beginning with "Den Onde Keysten" closig with "Svarte troner" this is truly a musical masterpiece done right by the one and only Varg the viking. All of the songs were written between '91 and '92, save for track vi, done on '89.

This is a cd thats all black metal fans have to listen to at least once, and you'll probably either love it or hate it, but it's definatly worth the listen....cold depressing music straight from the veins of one of the forefathers of black metal, the Count! Grab it now!

I don't give a fu*k, if Varg killed Euronymous, this album is pure Black Metal!

quite strang work..intro,outro,2 instrumentals and 4 "real" songs, some very fast blackm. some more slow..a sort of transition album?..really strange one..vote:3.5,4 outta 5.INTERESTING.

This album is undeerrated in my opinion as it is imbetween Burzum/Aske and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss. But it is just as good as they arer with some really good tracks on here Key to the gate, En ring til aa herske, Lost wisdom and i guess all of the other tracks....
But has Varg ever done anything that deserves less than 10/10?....no

DAMN !

stop to speak about Burzum, please.
There are two solution :
- You are understanding and living Burzum, (if you have heard the piano in "Det Som Engang Var", for example so you have really heard Burzum...)

-Or You don't understand Burzum and you DON'T fucking speak about him.

Understand or Die.

The first burzum record i bought and yet it still stands firm in my collection. Ive heard people complain about the bad production, the lengthy tracks or vargs beliefs but In reality Black metal is NOT meant to please and is purposely hard going and thats exactly what this album is. Freezing Cold Black metal from a man that will forever live in black metal history.Whether it as Hero or villain is to be seen But until then let the music speak for itself.

Great album with many great songs.Best album along with Burzum/Aske.En Ring Til Aa Herske is my fave and Varg is a legend!

My favorite of burzum and a true classic. Who cares if varg killed euronymius, vargs was a better musician.
Kea to the gate is the best song, but the others are classics too. Rating: 10/10

En Ring Till aaHerske.Ý dont know any word! PERFECT!

I like this album. Jesus Tod is one of the best pieces of Black Metal I know. The mixture between ambient and good old Black Metal is quite perfect.

Varg is a madman, a nazi, a criminal, a murder, of course. But the music itself is absolutly fascinating. I love it, but I can't understand the fans of the person of Varg...

Well, I think that this is a load crap. The riffs are mostly pritty simple and boring. But the worst thing in this is the vocals, which ruin the whole album.

And Varg is a ridiculous maniac who should be locked somewhere.

this is true black metal. Hon som reiste is a great song. Count Grishnackh is the man. Great album

This album is really awful. BM is my fav style for 5-6 years, but still find Burzum music TERRIBLE AS HELL!

Review by: theschattenjagger

Raw and atmospheric. This album is a great example of Varg's unique style of black metal which makes him stand out from all the other black metal bands at the time. The vocals take a while to get used to, but once your used to them, they add to the harshness of the music. The only thing i didn't really enjoy where the non-guitar instramentals which drag on a bit. Apart from that and the solo in Key to the Gate, which makes me touch myself (its that good!) this is a great album.

10 stars whatever. varg vikerness will always be the greatest act in the world dont like it cry.
Det Som Engang Var Is Vargs thrid best album in my veiw

Well, this is certainly an interesting second full-length, interesting being the appropriate term in my view. I personally don't think this album is as good as the other three albums musically. There are some interesting things going on in a few songs but over-all there's too much atmospheric interludes and too little black metal (4 out of 8 songs are atmospheric pieces without drums). This is not a problem for a release like filosofem, but it is for a more typical black metal-styled album like det som engang var.

Having said that, the main focus of Burzum is not the musical expect but the atmosphere. And Varg is absolutely brilliant at using a wide variety of musical techniques (he added more and more different elements with each album) to support the over-all goal of making the fantasy-worlds he had created with each album come to life for the listener. Although it doesn't grab me as much as hvis lyset tar oss or filosofem, this is still a unique album that must be experienced (not just heard) to be fully appreciated, like all burzum releases.

Burzum's second album goes even further than the debut. There are some excellent instrumentals entitled "Den onde kysten", "Han som reiste" and "Naar himmelen klarner". The black metal songs are absolutely great, beautiful and harmonic. A good example is the guitar solo on "key to the gate". Personally this is the best black metal album I've heard so far. 9,75/10

Cool album. Not as depressing as their other stuff being a little more upbeat but still as malicious as ever. I love the 'key to the gate' track. One of my personal favs. Probably my favorite Burzum album due to the minimal ambient tracks which become a lot more frequent and come to dominate later releases. Good dynamics present here to. If the actual song "det som engang var" was on this album it would be by FAR their best
