simply.this is the darkest, more blaphemer album from all the metal scene for me.In spite of this is not an unholy black metal album, because it has many elements from death metal,I think it reflects the pilosophy of this music perfectly. The work of fenris mades me think that he is one of the best drummers in norwegian black metal and outside this country.the voice effects will send you to the blackest, coldest world you can imaginate, full of demons and enemies of christ.there is no way for trends with this band.you love them or hate them, but they are one of true black metal bands that never change.the production is better than other albums like transilvanian hunger and the sound is what you can wait from this band:amazing.this is ,with a blaze in the northern sky,the best album from dark throne for me.

I think, this is the only bad Darkthrone-Album. This one has nothing to do with classics like "A blaze in the northern sky", "Under a funeral moon", "Transilvanian Hunger" or "Panzerfaust". The more "modern-sounding" records, like "Total Death", "Ravishing Grimness" and "Plaguewielder" haven't anything to do with this crap, too.
The songwriting on "Goatlord" is not really bad, but the songs sound terrible. Here is no power, no evil atmosphere, but only absurd and ridiculous experiments. The best example for that are the unfitting female vocals on a few songs, which were nothing more than unnecessary.
I'm really glad, that the other albums before and after "Goatlord" belong really to the absolute Black Metal elite-albums.

It's indeed a bit different from other darkthrone release's, but what a feeling is is here. For me this is the best darkthrone release. When I first listened to it I thaught it was shit, but after I heard the album 20 times, I began to like it more and more. Songs like In His Lovely Kingdom are thrilling!
It is true, you hate them or you love them, and I love this very much. Expect total rawness and cold!!

AWESOME
in the way of Francisco,
After having listening this album,it make me think Fenriz is one of the best drummer of black metal. The sound is ugly, its a kinda rehearsal or garage production like. But,Take an acid, then listen the song 'black daimon'
If u still have a healthy brain, give me a feedback.

This is a good Darkthrone album, not the best, but hardly crap as one review said! I think that possibly the only problem with this is that the music was recorded a year or three before the vocal tracks were put on it so that there is a quality variation between the two. It makes the vocals a little overpowering. The other albums got a good mix on that score (unlike some of Emperor's where the vocal was way back in the background!) To make this on a par with the others it should've been totally re-recorded. That said though, i really enjoy the raw pre production sound of this album! Besides we Darkthrone fans can hardly be called sticklers for polished production!!! One not to be missing from a raw, pure black metal fans collection!

Pure demoniac blessing!!! Do you know the "female vocals" had been done by Fenriz himself? This is not a joke, it's true!!! True black metal forever...
Quintessence.

This record is for the true darkthrone freaks out there. It has a shitty sound which will deter some but you cant deny how great this release is. As raw as black / death metal can get, its the most different darkthrone record out there. its one of those cds which you will hate at first but after each listen it will infect you more and more. yet another fuckin grim and evil recording from the kings of black metal

This has got to be one of Darkthrones darkest releases. This was suppose to be their second album, but instead they recording and released "A Blaze in the Northern Sky". This is a killer record one of my favorites of Darkthrone. The drummer is more complex and so is the guitar work. Fenris does ALL VOCALS ON THIS, EVEN THE FEMALE VOCALS. Just buy this album. It's one of their best. 9/10

There is one fact regarding this album which seems to have been either overlooked, or no one bothered to mention: this was technically not a "newer" Darkthrone album. If I am not mistaken (and if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me!), the material from this album was written around the same time as "Soulside Journey" (a bit after, but before "A Blaze In The Northern Sky"), which accounts for the more death metal-oriented sound. That being said, if one isn't expecting the grim black metal Darkthrone is known for, this is an exceptional album! It is easy to forget that Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have a lot of skill at playing technical metal, but the dark guitar riffs and slowed down drums prove otherwise. The use of clean and "female" vocals really make this, to me, seem like a better tribute to Celtic Frost than Panzerfaust was. All in all, this album is far from their best, and won't appeal to all of their fans, but for those who loved Soulside Journey, check this one out!

This is the Darkthrone album that gets closest to demonic possession. I love it, it's all raw and atmospheric, and fucking ugly. Reminds me alot of static radio, but with food rhythm. Lot's of overdubbed vocals, making culto sound more demonic then ever, especially with the female vocals, and the range of culto's screams which ignorant fools choose to acknowledge. Reminds me of the book and movie, the Exorcist.

This is a bloody good DT cd. I really cant understand those who say there is no atmosphere etc. I say thats totally wrong. I find out this album has a great fucking atmosphere and the vocals are great. And really, - I have heared worse recordings than this and I cant even compare a bad recording with this one. This is how Dark Throne sounds. And the "female" ( which is actually Fenrizs voice (?) ) fits perfect to the music, thats not a problem at all. It actually makes the atmosphere even bigger ! Fuck off and stop listen to it if you dont like it !
9/10 Really, this is very very good.

something they wouldn't have never done but.....very good. psychotic and schizophrenic, nor soulside side neither a blaze side..........a strange transfigurated dimension for darkthrone
