Whoa. The atmosphere in this album is beyond words. Åkerfeldt's growling is amazing. Only thing I'm a bit disappointed is that they didn't continue what they showed in "For Funeral's to Come" since this differs in my opinion quite a lot from it. Still this is THE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE period and the only band whose records come even near this masterpiece is (surprisingly ;) their fellowband Opeth.

This album is a very good piece of dark metal.
but as i look to the past, or maybe hear.. i find that Dance of December Souls was way better.
not to be misunderstood - not much of similarities between the two, the band has evolved (again) and by it's own it's a good piece. Dance of.. had much heavier songs and sound.
it was way more doom, and even a fine example of classic doom. this album, is no classic by any means, but it's undeniably atmospheric, powerful, reach, and it has great production and awsome songwriting. bottom lines are that Dance of had better sound and songwriting, and that this if an absoloute wonderful put-out, but lacks that very-special-thing that bursts out of Dance of.. and the The Revival.
i think it's just not as deep and Dance of.. .

The best metal album ever made imo. My favorite album from my favorite band. The darkest album ever produced.
Minimalistic in nature, and yet it never feels repeatative or boring(a problem with many doom metal bands). The guitar-work sounds simplistic in the first few listens. but the chord selections are very smart and after a few listens the album awakens some kind of dark and depressive feeling deep inside of you. Mikael's growls and Jonas's vocals are a perfect match. Drumming is basic in many parts but it has some nice fills here and there, and it suits the music perfectly. The bass sound provides a strong background for the guitarwork which fits the minimalistic nature of music. Almost all of the songs have ups and downs, and they go through light and heavy parts which adds more dimention to the overall feel of the album.
Bottom line: Katatonia at their absolute peak, influences from doom metal and black metal make a perfect mix. This is a masterpiece.
10/10
