Since the great release of "World Funeral", I've really looked forward to hear the next album from Marduk. But I'm afraid that my expectations have been too high. "Plague Angel" is fast and brutal (like Marduk should be), but there is nothing new in it. The brutallity and fastness are cool, but that very feeling quick fades away, and half through the album you can't tell the tracks apart. Personally I'm a hardcore Marduk fan, but I would never pay the full price for this one. Sorry guys, better luck next time...

Not as good as "Panzer Division..." for me, but it is the album you should have got. Vocals are a bit better than before. Try this.

Here's the new Marduk's release: Plague Angel...What can we say about this one??
Well it's a pretty good album, good songs with fast and slow riffs, and from this album we can definetly listen to Mortuus as the new vocalist; i think that someone will like him more than Legion, but someone else will look back with regret to Legion...in any case this new vocalist is not bad in my opinion. But if we look at the whole album we can also say that something is missing....something that only albums like "Those of the Unlight" could bring....with this i'm not telling you that you're wasting your money, but i still prefer old marduk, that's all. So a pretty good release, not bad, maybe it deserves an 8, but i miss old times....

I have been following marduk for a while now and after the halfway decent world funeral i wasnt expecting much more out of the band. but i was spending some time in a local record store reading an article in a zine about marduks new album. they kept saying it was awesome...bkah blah blah...and with the new line up change i thought it would be decent..so i picked it up a couple months later since it came out later in the states...this is by far the worst album ive picked up in the last 4 years...the vocals...now i hated legions vocals...but these ones are boring...the guitar work just sounds like leftovers from panzer. just cheesy...nothin special at all...but i do suggest you listen to it before purchasing it since everyone does have a different taste in music... 1/10

Plague Angel - Marduk
---------------------

Not the first album by Marduk I listened too, and certainly not the last. With a practically "new" line-up, I'd say Marduk also made a new start. Also I think I would do this album injustice if I were to only compare it with "World Funeral", so I decided to compare to most of their older work.

Music :

The typical sound of Marduk is present of course, but not in such great matter as it was on World Funeral. Marduk has moved away more from the blastbeats, which is an improvement in my opinion. The complete instrumental song "Deathmarch" is also refreshing.

Apart from not being so blastbeat infested anymore, the drums have also evolved with more variated fills. These were missing on Panzer Division Marduk (which was a great album, don't get me wrong).

The guitars are the same as always. There's the death metal-like riffs, the long chord jamming riffs, and a crossbreed between the two. Scattered over the songs, these give it the needed variation.

Sound :

The production lacks nothing : the bass comes through well, the guitar distortion isn't too soft and not too heavy. The drums are played with the Marduk-labeled speed, and do not slow down. They remain steady, unlike older works by Marduk.

And then the most changing part, Mortuus. Comparing his vocals with those of Legion would be unfair. The new voice in Marduk is nice and rotten as it should be, and has the needed intensity aswell.

Overall :

Plague Angel is another unholy work, packed with frontal attacks on christianity, but without the needed variation.

A better aspect lies in it's simplicity :
not too much fucking around with the guitars, voices with now and then an effect on it, and not those endless long songs (which are not bad, but just not Marduk).

well, done. But it could have been much better !

8/10

This album has pleasantly surprised me, since IMO after Panzer Division Marduk they'd never been quite up to standards. Their new vocalist is quite convincing, and on stage he's overwhelming. Plague angel reminds me most of a hybrid between Nightwing and Panzer division: crushing and ridden with blastbeats, but not lacking a few slower, heavier songs. The booklet is beautifully laid-out, the lyrics have been displayed in a very cool way and suprisingly lack satanism (and mistakes in grammar!). The sound has been left remarkably rough, a la Those of the unlight (but less dry), giving the songs a dirtier, more chaotic touch. This adds in extremity, and together with the very Panzer-inspired guitar work, I'd say Marduk is among us again to rape christ and chew bubblegum...

and they're all out of gum.
