The new Mayhem album is not even worth of reviewing...
some techno shit or something...

Review by: Mik

For those of us completely obliterated by the pure brutality and hatred which pummeled us from "Wolf's Lair Abyss", to call this LP a disappointment is a severe understatement.

While we still admire and even deify the earlier works of the mighty Mayhem, "A Grand Declaration of Homosexuality" appears to be more of an insight into the band's newly acquired "alternative lifestyle" than the triumphant return of the undisputed kings of Norwegian Black Metal. If anything, Maniac's new shiny pleather pants are complented nicely by Hellhammer's psuedo-techno dance beats. What a shame.

Burn this disc, then wash your hands with a very strong disinfectant.

Well, MAYHEM is here again. They strike back with a new release. And what do they offer?
Controversy is a word that has been always partenaire of the MAYHEM horde, and this case is no exception. The style change featured here helped to the great hype that this album generated. If you played fast, harsh and severe black metal in the cold way in the previous MCD, and you then perform a kind of industrial-avantgarde-black metal in the next full-length album, you shouldn´t be surprised to see a wide range of reactions and feed-back to the release in all the scene.
MAYHEM´s "GDOW" is not a bad album, in my opinion. It´s not crap, it´s not a horrible CD. It´s just wrong. They have mocked the MAYHEM concept to create a weirdo of an album that has got its good parts, but a general view of it makes it unable to be swallowed by the MAYHEM fan that expected their true essence in the music. I will judge this album in a different way, depending if it has been done by a new band or by a established legendary band like MAYHEM is. The music is the same, but the bandname and the concept, tradition and purity behind it is too important to be ignored in the analysis.
Maniac´s vocal work is just unbearable in the spoken parts that lead the music even to rap landscapes. And the cybervocals are also forgettable. The techno track is absolutely out of time and place. The drumfills remind of circus´ music or an army´s parade, sometimes. The lyrical concept and layout are pretentious and chaotic.
Good sides? Well, the sound is almost perfect. Maybe the drums are a bit higher -Hellhammer exhibits his great skills better this way-. The first song is correct. The fast songs and parts are very convincing and roughly violent.
I mean, with another band behind, this would be an average album. A bit innovative, daring to face the old black metal patterns... but as an album released by MAYHEM, it looks ridiculous and excessively different from the sound that the scene could expect from MAYHEM. Progression means no prostitution.

Mayhem is dead, just like their leaders

Review by: jerry

the first reviewer gets it right... this is the NEW mayhem, so don't compare it with the old mayhem.. they will never be as they were once.. you know why? cuz euronymous and dead are so fucking dead.. it's just logic to say this isn't real mayhem, cause only the name has survived

people always show there pathatic face when a band has no new thing to show us on their new album, mayhem does it diffrent, and so on, they get puked right on their face.. why? just because they want to explore new routes for music.

metal can't be the same, but eventualy may not even differ from the rest.. well..get a life moron, that isn't even possible...

i like this album, i like it without having the old mayhem in my mind.. this album stands on it's own, the new mayhem stands on it's on.. and all you fuckfaces who cannot see the diffrences between those bands just have to keep there mouth shut, ignorant fools...

Pure shit. Hail Dead!!!

Review by: Necro-Funeral

If you assholes think this album sucks, you need to go home and have sex with yourselves. I think that songs like "In the Lies where Upon You Lay", "A Time to Die" and "View from Nihil" kick ass. And u know what? Hellhammer kicks fucking ass! Can't you assholes understand he has worked hard to make this recording best possible?! Listen to the songs "A Time to Die" and "A View from Nihil" and you'll know what I'm bablin' about. Hellhammer is the most vicious bastard battery beater ever born on universe. But hey... Blasphemer is also a good guitarist, but I don't like Maniac's growling vox, they are like from an evil goblin. If you don't think so, get "Wolf's Lair Abyss" and you know what I've been trying to say.

If you necrobutchers are so total asswipes that don't even bother to give a chance to this recording, you can damn sure do the same thing as Dead did. But yeah... you're right in one thing. There IS some techno trash in here, and boy, it S U C K S ! But hey, look at the bright side of this album; it's not that techno as Hellhammer's other band's, The Kovenant's "music". That must be 'the pure shit' you're all talking about.

I know this isn't black metal at all, but it's really tasty stuff and Mayhem's best recording. I don't like the hideous old black metal they made, but I think "De Mysteriis dom Sathanas" still has pretty good songs. But this one kix ass!

punisher should be punished for his review! old mayhem's alive on cd!!

i agree that this album is not the best. i saw mayhem live in sheffield recently and i agree that they have gone soft. i spat on maniac and he did nothing about it.. what is this man? is he as dark as he wants to be? i was also shocked by the way they cowered when i jumped on stage and got my shirt signed (thanks necrobutcher). the true mayhem had better bring out some "real black metal" next time or i will turn away............ hail to the fallen, euronymous, dead - rip

Review by: IMPERATOR REX ANGLORUM

This is a weird weird mayhemepos , it's evil allright, but it's not always black metal (do I hear punk and rage against the machine?) , for me this is really untasty , they had some good ideas for this album but well...
things didn't work out the way they should I guess. Still there are people who really enjoy this album ( because it's so freaky?) but me , nah , i prefer mediolanum capta est.
You will not see me listening to this album.

Hell yeah... what to say about this album? If I tell that I am a very huge fan of old Burzum, Darkthrone, and music in the same way, what to add..? this is not for me, but I know people who like this album because it's progressive and I believe that maniac&co. just wanted to push out their new visions on black metal.. guys,I think this album deserves a little respect!

Review by: Sargoth

You know. i'm happy that some of this guys are dead...

Review by: Zamzack

first i think the new mayhem its better than the old one, mostly a music band and not a bunch of criminals like euronimous was.blasphemer its even a better guitarrist than euronomous, and now its when they can show how good musicians they are,the album its really great and not the usual black metal shit that now a days we can see every where,im afraid one of these days mtv make a black metal show due to the meanstream shit that all these have become...hail mayhem...

Review by: soulmakabra

This album is horrible! It isn't black metal at all. I think this wouldn't afraid my grandmother! Poor "false" Mayhem... It's time for me to listen the great "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" and forget this masquerade!!!
Quintessence.
Note : 0/10

Let's analyse the line-up first;

Maniac - The gay man from beyond.
quote from Live in Marseille DVD "I think my lyrics will only be understood in a hundred years..." - while holding a joint for the cameras (holding, not smoking).

Necrobutcher - He is one of the remaining "true" mayhemic bastards, and he plays like shit.

Hellhammer - He has the spaceman attitude and brings the influence of shit-metal tech-drumming like the kovenant and arcturus (which i fuckin' despise).

Blasphemer - Probably maniac's boyfriend, i don't see any other reason for him to be in mayhem.

And here you have it. This shit cocktail of gaymen play their space-metal for your entertaining pleasure. Don't be fooled by the band name, this is far from beeing "Mayhem"

Let us review the situation from the beginning. Times have changed, people have changed, Black Metal has changed and so has Mayhem. If any one has read the lyrics from the newer albums of bands like Mayhem, Satyricon, Emperor, etc. they understand what I am talking about. Black Metal isn't anymore a pseudo-satanic warfare propaganda against the christian empire (for that as proven to be a pathetic effort to solve anything at all or even bring up something worthy of being followed) but much more a logical ideology and philosophy based on the thoughts of nihiilism, atheist logic and a rebirth of cultural identity. We can't prove that we are better with guns, stones or axes, we will only prove that we came from irracional beings and that we've lost our 5 million years of evolution for some piece of shit hatred against christianity. The real power is in the mind and the true war comes from the uprising of new life concept as well as new artistic and cultural forms. That is what black metal is turning into, something logical and worthy of respect. To all of those who still believe in a "true" war against christianity you are just as pitiful and blindfolded as the Islamic fundamentalist movements. Hail to the all the ones in Black Metal who still think with their brain and not their cock and balls

I like this album very much. Its far away technical and faster than the world. Maybe some elektro songs are not very god. But the metal songs are special. The way much better than deathcrush.

Review by: human

Fantastic album! although this would not suit the typical try hard 'KVLT' Black Metallers that will only listen to raw metal. Although I have NOTHING against raw Black Metal, this album is great, some parts are shit, like most albums. But it keeps true to the MAYHEM way, first deathcrush came out which rocked Norway, then De Mysteriis.. was unleashed and was by far more creative then Deathcrush and shook the world, now once again they have bought out something even more technical and. This may seem a dissapointment to many as Euro and Dead are not in it, but we all know (at least some of us) Euronymous was not technically in Mayhem before his death anyway. This album was inevitable, whether he survived or not. Its a great work of art, get it if you are into more progressive black metal but not commercial.

Not for the close minded 'BM' fans that cannot grasp onto something new. Things change, its called evolution, only the weakest of creatures do not relise this, and will perish.

i agree that this ain't the best album from the greath and one of the best black metal bands in the univers same with burzum and darkthrone the vocals arn't that good the old vocals from manaic are fucking great but on this album aren't they what they need to be !!!
so mayhem plz make your old music again it was fucking great but this album is good to but not the best

This is not the same Mayhem... it's better! A lot of "the true Mayhem" fans hate this album. But it's better than "Deathcrush", "De Mysteriis..." and other old songs of Mayhem. Maybe I'm a heretic, but black metal could not be still the same music as in 80's.

Review by: Seraph

This album is hell great and those who think: "This is new techno shit" haven't listened it properly or base their opinion upon the grim and necro thinking of true, evil tough black metaller idiots. Hail new MaYhEm!!!

Review by: baarthag

I would like to follow the words of Kanwulf, that TRUE black metal is dead as is the black metal ideology!! But this gayish total fucking crap is not even worth mentioning!
To all you 'progressive' cock-suckers who call yourselves black metallers and talk about evolution and shit: FUCK OFF SUBHUMANS!! This is not what black metal is all about!! You disgrace this music fucking posers! I piss on your dirty rotten corpses dickheads!!
Understand this: black metal is more than just music: it's the lifestyle, and those who really want to follow it ends up in jail or ends up dead. Also black metal must be raw, primitive, hateful and unhuman art, because that's what it's all about fellas, not some gayish matherfucking sweet cunt-licking music for child-molesters and dog-fuckers. So don't call this shit a black metal!!
Mayhem is dead!!
Hail true black metal!!

Watch out! The sound of war is coming! …And so is the time for me to sleep. This in by far the most boring and disappointing war-album ever made. Forget about this one and buy Marduk’s PANZER DIVISION instead.

A Grand Declaration of war...

Well i have to say that i'm fan of Black Metal(experimental and not), old Death Metal, Mathcore, Slugde-Doom, Thrash, Ambient and all this shit...

well i think Grand Declaration of war IS NOT a black metal album...if you have an objective definition of what "Black Metal" is...

Of course if this album has nothing to do with black metal, then neither "Thorns", nor "666 International" have...

Do you LIKE these albums? Do you like good music? I love black metal, but if i want to listen black metal at 00's i won't search for it in these albums... Black Metal is "Triumph.Genocide.Antichrist" by the might Revenge (hail!) and "Liberation" by 1349...

I think Grand Declaration of War is an album beyond signs...
As a Black Metaller i talk with many friends for this albums... Some of them say that is gay, the more serious of them say that is not "nihilist black metal" and so they don't like it and some of them say that Mayhem in now a pop-band... But I have also talked to people that they don't say anything...just listen to this great (for me) album...

Did you listen to "Chimera"? is it gay or nihilist black? no
i think that "true black metallers" talk about ressurection of the old Mayhem...but the Snorre-riffing is still there...

Wy do you put borders to music? Mayhem is here for all of us... If you don't like it, just don't listen to it...

for me it's 9/10

i preferably think this album horible(pure shit, if you would) dont buy it! if you like blackmetal, dont buy it! if you like mayhem, dont buy it! just dont but it! the only slightly interesting thing on this ceedee was the lyrics, but overall i dont feel this album even desrves my review.

Review by: arcanechild

One of the greatest albums written by a black metal band undoubtedly.
This is not "pure","true" or "uber kvlt" black metal. This is MUSIC based on the principles of black metal.
Magnificent music with some of the best lyrics mayhem ever had.
Hailz!

Review by: The Lekkman

i am not dissapointed in this album...it is the MAYHEM... thats enough for me to understand and respect them even more...

Review by: dark-girl

People slam this album constantly, but this album dosen't deserve that. Sure, this wasnt old Mayhem, but nobody can make the music they made in their prime. Yes there were some weird tracks, and a couple that were just silence, but "View From Nihil(Part I)" and "To Daminion" were excellent songs respectivly, this was a good album, it's a sham that it only has a 6.8.

Review by: ChainsawGutsFuck666

experimental album...failure!!!! except view from nihil

Review by: musta_miekka

the black metal scene is poisoned beyond all hope... black metal once was about music and individuality and most black metalers didnt give a flying fuck about every one else, and thats exactly what mayhem did.... they did not make a shit record, they made what they felt like amking, and fuckin great too. this is still hateful, chaotic, and pure rage as it was in other mayhem, the only difference is that in some parts it is controlled chaos, not full on shatter your mind energy as their previous records were... and to that i say what ever, i like it, and they didnt make it permenent either, they did what they wanted to and got back to business of keeping you little bastards entertained, so i guess you ignorent losers are just lucky to have bands to keep you entertained while your playin with your little pricks

Review by: god

I don't know what all your purists are bitching about. This isn't techno, they use keyboards in like three songs. They felt like doing something different, and they did. It sure as hell beats the crap out of most of their older stuff. The drumming is insane, the vocals are damn cool, and if you dismiss this as garbage then you're missing out on a badass cd. Mayhem doesn't follow Metal, Metal follows Mayhem. They can do whatever the fuck they want, as long as they're not making some garbage pop-rap shit. This is still one intense album, you're not going to hear this played on any radio-station. So quit your whining and griping and learn to appreciate something different.

Review by: False Messiah

This is like a trip to the foredoomed futur...,post-apocalyptic black metal.Totally original and experimental album.Other posers can fuck off, this album rules \m/

Review by: -Vomïtzodïak-

Strange but not in a good way. I do not mind electronic influences in theory, but I do mind a band that tries to sound like something it is not, by its own definition
