Metallica Metallica is a great album, which is containing one of their best tracks, Nothing else matters, and Wherever i may roam, and offcourse, The Unforgiven. this cd is one of my best cd's for metallica, though now it is 11 years old (its 2001 now) but still it shows how metallica can be great.

what happened to this band? drugs? money? bon jovi?

This is where it went wrong.
It just sucks a year and a half in the studio for this piece of crap.

This is where metallica became a sellout band, an absolute destruction of the band. I must give them credit for knowing where the money's at. They knew what the fuck they were doing, fucking their real fans in the ass, and adding some madonna fans to their fan club.

Though sometimes this record is called “The Black Album”, it has no title, as a matter of fact. Well, since that’s debut records that have no titles, we can draw a conclusion that we have some different Metallica. Well, of course, not entirely different, ‘cause metal is still metal, power and melody are still up to standards, but that was really a new stage: the songs are shorter and less sophisticated (which means, more understandable to an average listener), the lyrics are not so exclusively all-inclusive (I mean, about global problems) but relating to more personal feelings and issues. The subjects here are also different: a child dreaming nightmares (“Enter Sandman”), good and bad sides of the man (“Sad But True”), animality in us (“Of Wolf and Man”), Christianity with all its hypocrisy (“Holier Than Thou”, “The God That Failed”), man’s helplessness in the infinite universe (“Through the Never”), endeavors to find oneself in this world (“The Unforgiven”), relations between friends (“Nothing Else Matters”). The last two, ballads, are surely excellent, though “NEM” is a song that, in my opinion, is too often run on different MTV and pop-related radio stations, as if Metallica has always had only one song. All the album tracks are more or less good (though “Don’t Tread on Me” and “The Struggle Within” seem to be poorer than others). As for me, what I like pretty much is “My Friend of Misery”, the multipart track calling to mind best works of 1984, 1986 and 1988 albums, and “The God That Failed” where Hetfield blames religion. (And what else is left to the man whose mother died of cancer, not wanting to receive treatment because she thought God would save her? “Where is your God?” that’s what James asks.) Many think that this album is the last worthy release in the Metallica discography. Proving if this opinion is really true or not is up to anyone who listens to it. But I also would like to say the following: if someone does not like pop commercial shit (at least, I think that Metallica, adepts at true heavy metal, can’t be blamed for such stuff), then make up and come out with something better without just throwing words around.

This album rules. But I don't agree that it was the highest point of the band. They're highest point was And Justice...but this album showed how they wanted to change their sound a bit, and it worked. 8/10.

this is when metallica turned GAY.Lars fell in love with Bob Rock, and raped him. this album pretty much ended the bands good music making forever.

OK

This as the first step metallica took in the wrong directin which eventually lead to st anger.

However, this is still a great album as far as im concerned

This album is beginning of Metallica´s wrong way. Album isn´t bad but some tracks sounds like shit- Holier Than Thou...and some else. I really love Unforgiven and Wherever I May Roam...

in my opinion this is a fucking good album. sure they went in a different step from their usual thrash metal, but every song on this album ranges from good to excellent. they did add in a bit of their classic thrash at the end with the struggle within. they made a number of songs on this cd which have become all-time favourites of many people, eg enter sandman, the unforgiven, wherever i may roam, nothing else matters, etc, the list can go on. if metallica kept the same old formula for this album, then fans would have been even more disappointed when load and reload came out cus those two are shockers. so respect this fine album and metallica in their glory before their recent albums.

the first "bad" album Metallica has released. I don't understand how people can say that "Enter Sandman" was the highlight of their career. "Enter Sandman" marked the beginning of the long and painful road towards failure.

The only still great song on this album must be "Nothing Else Matters". Significantly different from other (good) Metallica songs, this one is the only good one left on this album.

Also note that all of the songs have become way shorter, and the original album structure is completely gone.

I must say that Metallica took a wise decision by going a different road, and letting Cliff take the true Metallica with him to his grave. This is probably the best.

Although this album sucks, it is way better then trying to do the same thing without the crucial and masterfull skills of Cliff Burton. Too bad it had to go like this ...

This is the first album I ever bought I was 12, and that's what started my whole metal experience I think it was a steptool to what I am now.

I don't get what everyone's fucking problem is. This album is amazing. yeah, it's not like their older stuff, but honestly..I think if they did another album of the same thing it would just be boring. I don't think it's the first step on "a road to failure", and neither is Load (I happen to love that album). Watch any videos from concerts when they were touring for the Black Album, it's absolutely insane. Yes, the songs are shorter, but frankly I like that. The only thing that's always bothered me about metallica is that eeeevery single song has to have 2 minute intros and outros. I think it's so fucking annoying. I'm all for long songs, but Metallica doesn't really know how to do it right. The songwriting and lyrics are still the same old metallica, just has a more melodic feel to it. I love their softer stuff. st anger still sucks though. all in all, not as good as their previous efforts, but still damn good. 8/10
