When I listen to MDB, I always feel myself alone and that no one understands this feeling I have. I can't listen to any albums with anybody, only all alone. This record makes me feel the same as the previous ones. It's the perfect mix of death metal and infinite romantic (which is missing from TLOTEOTW). Long, depressing songs with sad and tired vocals and crushing guitar sounds. No boring parts but instant changes and great MDB-mood! The Raven and the Rose is the most terrific and brutal death metal and MDB-song of ever. And those who seek for romance and dark sadness won't fail with some Dreadful Hours.

Well....So My Dying Bride are somewhat returning to their older sound. This album combines perfectly the sound of The Light at the End of the World with a bit of a feeling of their older albums. This means melodic doom/death at it's best. The band is in a great period of inspiration and you can hear it in this great album! It also includes a re-recording of their debut's classical song Return of the Beautiful now entitled Return to the Beautiful.Absolutely recommended!!!

A masterpiece of Doom/Death from the masters of the genre, this is the return to form that I have been waiting for. Aggressive, brooding, intense, sorrowful - all these emotions are conveyed on this cd. Some times haunting, other times crushing, but always heartfelt.

It's the best album of this 2001, even though it might not be the greatest MDB album. 'The dreadful hours' is one of the darker MDB song ever;'the raven and the rose' is a cool doom/death metal song; 'Le Figlie Della Tempesta' is repetitive and simple but amazing , it reminds 'cry of mankind' by its hypnotic guitar; 'Black Heart Romance' is a great gothic song, with a cool guitar work ; 'A cruel taste of winter' is pure doom !!! slow and sorrowful; 'my Hope the Destroyer' could fit perfectly in 'like gods of the sun' and 'The Deepest of All Hearts' is quite close to the atmosphere of TLatEotW. What can I say about 'the Return To the beautiful :) ? One of the bands best songs, now with black metal vocals. Brilliant ! Check out this cd. You will not be disappointed.

it's an ok album. but it could have been ALOT better. imo there is only 1 really great song on this album and thats the first one, which also has the same name as the album.

i was expecting more good songs. this is very disappointing. far from the best mdb album, even though that first track probably is the best doom metal song i have ever heard.

let's hope their next album is better.

6/10

This was the first album i bought from My Dying Bride and i also think is one of their best..really but really sad with nice atmospheric keyboards and excellent guitar riffs, this album is a masterpiece...
Highlights are My Hope the Destroyer,The Deepest of all Hearts,A Cruel Taste of Winter and the heavy The Raven and The Rose.

Another mood inducing masterpiece. I for one am pleased with the merging of the old death/doom sound with a more atmospheric song structure. Some say they are treading water and playing it safe, but more of this is not a bad thing! Heaviness doesn't necessarily mean a sledgehammer, and this is coming from someone who was there in the first wave in the early eighties buying up Venom, Bathory, Possessed, etc., and then enjoyed the grind/crust material of the late 80's, early nineties. The controlled heaviness here is amazing. Anathema and Paradise Lost have moved far from their roots (although Anathema is enjoyable when the mood strikes), but MDB have kept both feet in the dark pool.

Such a beautyful album this is.... i have not headr all their albums but so far this is the best for me!! specially The Dreadful Hours.. The lyrics speaks about a young child and his fears... The background sound effect (the rain) gave more emphasis to the setting of the message of the song....very powerful and unsofisticated lyrics... To simplyfy... Depressing and a true Metal Goth music!!

I recently purchased this album, far better than The Light at the End of the World (though that album was good). Blast beats can be heard here, mid-paced to slow, Aaron's voice is great, and the keyboards are used sparingly but work to the full effect everytime. I highly recommend this album!
