"Orchid" is Opeth's first and, in my opinion, best release. The epic scale of this complex musical journey is unmatched so far (even by "Morningrise"). Intensely melodic riffs, exquisite acoustic interludes, excellent vocals. This album has it all. Never a dull moment. My favourite tracks are "In Mist She Was Standing" and "The Twilight Is My Robe".

One of the more stunning and devastingly powerful debuts of any metal band in any genre. Though Opeth's majesty has only recently reached American audiences via Century Media, this timeless classic is a great way to hear how genius is performed.

"So," you ask, "how do you really feel about this album? And don't hold back." Funny you should ask. This is downright one of the best pieces of work in extreme metal. Though they aren't wall-of-noise black metallists like many of their Scandanavian brethen, their roots in both black metal (noticeable mostly in Mikael Akerfeldt's vocals) do put them outside most circles of listeners, thus appealing to fans of bands such as Edge of Sanity, Katatonia (with whom Akerfeldt has been involved), In Flames, and others in the European scene. What sets Opeth apart from the rest is their enormity involved in the songwriting. Almost all their tracks are around eight to fourteen minutes long (with the exception of the interludes of "Requiem" and "Sillouette") and very intricate in terms of execution. Opeth writes some mighty guitar leads and very tasty riffage to base their music. Acoustic guitars spice up the material from time to time, along with some chants and clean singing. Though some death/black purists will dismiss Opeth, it's their loss. This outfit is destined for some great things down the road.

Orchid was really great. Orchid and Morningrise were the Black Metal albums of Opeth. The older, the better.

a perfect cd to surround yourself in. think about a long walk or drive to the forest on a cloudy day and seeing fog glide across a lake. emotions are in a flurry. well if you could put that to a musical form this would have to be it. to those newer fans who are not used to songs of a sprawling length or a catch poppy chorus hook beware. a perfect 5 in my book

The first Opeth opus is actually i very good one. Its the first of the two candlelight records albums, and the best one of the two. On this debut Opeth comes with a very original song structure. The vocals are more black metal than on the later release (MAYH-Deliverance), but it really fits in this album.
The reason why i like this more than Morningrise, is that this is more an album with REAL songs. Where Morningrise is more an album that is filled with tons of riffs, this album is far more better. The sound is heavier and quite powerfull. The basslines are nice to hear, the guitars are heavy and the solo's are professional. The drums are good and loud in the heavy parts with a lot of rolls and sort of jazzy in the more easy parts. Also the drumplayer Anders Nordin plays the piano, which gives it a more intense sound.
I think this album is a milestone in the progressive music world, i dont think this is only doom and black metal, its not very very fast and heavy (Opeth never is a VERY heavy band) but its melodic, the only sick thing in Opeth are the vocals of Akerfeldt. Some parts of the music even reminds me of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin (listen to the solo's in In Mist She Was Standing).
I dont think you can really compare this with the other cd's because after Morningrise they went down on a different way, still Opeth but MAYH, Blackwater Park and Deliverance are far more heavy than this one and Morningrise. This is definately on of the best progressive death/black/doom releases i've ever heard. Opeth fans just have to own this one others have to listen this to give the early opeth work a chance. Its different than the later releases so i warn : first listen to some songs of the peaceville/music for nations cd's to look if you like the older stuff too. Nice information, if you own the re-release you can find a bonus track called : Into Frost Of Winter, you can hear some parts of the song Advent (of the Morningrise album on it). Just give this band a chance! and enjoy! Rating : 77/10

Opeth's first album...and what a début. This album is fantastic. Even though it has mixing flaws it is still a great album. There are some really great songs on this one. All the songs are either mixed with growl and clean vocal or just plain growl. Luckily The lead singer has the best growl in the business. Get this great album if you can.

9.5/10

Opeth is my favorite band and Orchid is my favorite album.
My favorite songs are The Apsotle in Triumph, Forest of Cotober and the rest are also very good.
When i first listened this album I liked the musical structure, always have liked music that is not repetitive and the riffs and the clean parts brought a contrast that is so rich and full of diversity. A masterpiece i would dare to call Orchid.

For me, this is the best metal album ever made. Every minute of the album is great, unlike others that are good, but have at least some minutes boring, or some music.
It takes us to many emotion states. Relax, angry, happiness, sadness, it even makes us cry in many parts because of it's beauty. Surely, this only happens when you listen this album a couple of times... many.
You never heard it?! What are you whaiting for?

"Orchid" is the first installment in the Opeth legacy and one of my personal favorites. It dispays a wide variety of emotion unlike other Scandinavian metal bands, which typically focus more on anger and hatred. I would recommend "April Ethereal" and "Silhouette" to anyone and the lyrics are very thought provoking as well. An excellent album overall and one worthy of any metal enthusiast's attention.

This album is one of the best albums I've heard.
Have you ever listened to an album which creates images and landscapes in your head and makes you want to be alive to appreciate the beauty of nature?

Orchid is the record, in my opinion only Morningrise is slightly better.

My favourite tracks are "Forest Of October", "The Twillight Is My Robe" and "The Apostle In Triumph" but the whole record is a masterpiece.

It was in the time, I was still discovering a lot of metal styles and bands. I was not sure at the time which style I liked best, when i heard this album for the first time. It was the first Opeth album I heard. I was amazed, blown away, in a rush, what a powerfull guitars, its spine breaking, its amazing crushing, weeping, shreddings solo\'s and riffs. The dark atmosphere, the changing of emotions in the following from track 1 to 7, this a journey, there is indeed no single moment that is boring in this album. Since that day its been one of my alltime favorites, and no matter what music I discovered later, Heavy metal/Thrash/Death/Jazz/Obscure NWOBHM/old Doom/Classics, theres was always 1 time I wanted to hear this album again. So powerfull, its almost magical album.
I have this vinyl version from I believe displeased records, but I;m not really content with that one. Poor version, no lyrics, no specials, and ofcourse the tracklist in different order than the CD. I cant listen to a different tracklist order with this album, Heard it so much I cannot accept hearing different order. Its a shame because this album is meant for vinyl. I once read that Mikael is 1 big vinyl collector, so I think he could have demanded a better release for this.. but oh well. Its still magnificient album. My favorite track: The Twilight is My robe. Regards!
