Your Review:

This quality work from Poema Arcanus, a well-educated doom band hailing from a country as distant as Chili, smothers us with not less than 73 minutes of pure dark doom. There is not a trace of joy on this album, nor any glimpse of the sun; the night is long, dark and cold.

The tempo is generally very low and the clear, deep vocals from Claudio Carrasco are even deeper than those of Peter Steele (Type O Negative). Mourning, low-tuned guitars shred the sky into pieces and the majestic, dark keyboards create a sacred atmosphere with a particular Chilean touch from those four gentlemen plus one lady.

Furthermore, 'Arcane XIII' has a crystal-clear production and it should fit nicely in any doom collection. You can order this album for 20 US$ from Claudio Carrasco, PO Box 24, Santiago-43, Chili.

Poema Arcanus
Arcane XIII
Picoroco Records
I must confess that at first I didn't give much credit or time to this release... but progressively and after some decent listens I was somehow hooked to this, and after that I decided that I had to interview this chilean band... Unfortunately the interview will be only featured on the next issue!!! So gentle is their music that I never gave them very space, even it I'm a Doom Metal fan... but as soon as their spell made the proper effect on me, I was totally amazed by their heaviness and whole atmosphere. The guitars are twisted, raw and highly drawling like their genre demands, the vocals wanders between male and female dark crystal clear spoken words and growling ones. All the changes in this album (guitars, vocals, keyboards, drums, bass... ) were well thought and keep the listener interested in the music. Also Picoroco Records made an excellent job in matters of the layout and packaging of the CD. Poema Arcanus represents melancholy in its most perfect level... A perfect album for dark doom fans. A pure gem!!!

Slow, symphonic dark art!! Deep tenor vocals combined with blackened shrieks and female vocals with well structured songs where the symphonic keys/piano and harmonized vocals blend well with melodic guitar and well disciplined drum work make this such a gem that fans of melodic dark art can appreciate!! Fans of ROOT or IN BLIND EMBRACE should pay attention to this!!.

LOST DISCIPLE (USA)

This Chilean band has already been open act for bands like: Napalm Death & Moonspell over their land, and after a name changing as it can reflects on their musical changing as well, Poema Arcanus brings us a blending of Depressive Doom Metal with few pinchs of Death, here you won't miss: female vocals (nice),keys (well putten on),grunts (they sounds better than louding ones),and all elements a good Doom band has to be. The songs are about 6 minutes, but they aren't boring at all. For the promo I got,I can see they're on the right way, 'cos they work professionaly and with the time why not to be one of the best Southern band, if they already aren't?!

IN EXTREMIS MAGAZINE

Poema Arcanus (Chile) "Arcane XIII"
Emotional Doom to the core, almost symphonic. Ingenious. Musically excellent, good compositions, good players. The singer is good too. Perfect. Not even too boring.

a doom metal jewel from my country, a great expression of a dark tormented soul

I've been searching for an answer to this question: 'what's doom metal?' and i found lots of bands which really don't touch my taste in metal.. bands without so great musicians and feeling... so i thought 'i don't think i like doom...' til a day i met a band called POEMA ARCANUS thru' their debut album 1998's Arcane XIII.
I can say Poema Arcanus is the best doom metal band ever.
And i even can say i listen to Arcane XIII as a priest read bible - i mean, VERY often! I really appreciate Arcane XIII's songs... they sound totaly METAL and the lyrics are poems which remember you that meaning of life.
If you like great music you must buy Arcane XIII.
And don't say you weren't warned!
