alright, this ones tough. not everyone will like this album, but i personally think it is a work of art. those who sometomes like something not completely brutal, and who like dark and evil, yet philosophical shit will love this album.

Agreed. This is infact my favorite black metal album of all time. the dark and medieval atmosphere is more present here than on any other album i know. every track brings into your mind the ancient times of the dark age, walk the path of sorrow being my favorite(listen with headphones!) the thin buzzing guitar sound, frost's insanely cool drumming, and satyr's hateful and mesmerizing vocals make this satyricon album the best for me. the newer satyricon albums are nothing like this so do not let them lead u into thinking this band never played black metal the way it was meant to be played, dark true and fucking evil with lots of atmosphere. if thats what u look for in your black metal than look no further than this great monument in black metal history! \m/

This is amazing.
The Atmosphere created is unlike any other I have ever heard, it is seductively dark and brooding.
Rich melodies are intertwined to capture and enrapture the listener. Satyrcion knew exactly what they were doing on this record which is alot to be said of other artists in this genre and time.
Altho I prefer Shadowthrone, it is impossible to compare the Satyricon albums, another must.
Masterpiece in every sense of the word.
9/10

This is the first album and it's a masterpiece. All the songs sounds great with a cold atmosphere and a fantastic medieval feeling. Satyricon show us they are a particuliar band. The beginning of the story... Only for the dedicated souls!!!!

This is the first Satyricon album ive ever listened to, and well, its a very good album. It has acoustic guitars, bass, electric, quick drumming, slow sections, and also fast grindy sections. Its all combined it pretty much every song. Plus, the lead singer was only 16 when he did this album!!! Which is a very impressive thing!

Fantastic album, the debut of Satyricon, one of the greatest black metal bands in Norway...
Great feeling, great songs...
A must.

Some of Satyricon's earlier work, Dark Medieval Times is yet another great album. Atmospheric music done at its very best. Like most of Satyricon's music this is Cold, Heartless, and beautiful at the same time. The track "Min Hyllest Til Vinterland," is one of the best tracks on the album. An acoustic song laid out against the background of swirling winds. You can't help but imagine yourself standing before a forest filled with fog, castles to your back. Amazing music, perhaps not as acessible to some people as their later releases, but amazing still. 9/10

Well the title of the album describes the content of the music perfectly. Sit back and let the music take you to dark medieval times. This is my personal favourite Satyricon album. I believe it has one of the darkest productions i've ever heard. Not dark as in raw (like Darkthrone), it has more of a bleak and ancient sound to it. There are keyboards present through most of the songs, but they don't override the guitars, they just compliment them. I really like the opening riff on track 5, it sounds awesome when the bass and drums enter. No bad songs on this album, just classics. 9/10

This is one of the best black metal albums I have ever heard. I know that everyone has said this, but the atmosphere created is incredibly dark. Every song is amazing. Satyr's songwriting is fantastic on this album and his vocals sound really dark and cool. The vocals sound especially good with the reverb effect. Frosts drumming is awesome too. The guitars sound different from most black metal guitars; they're really thin, but dark at the same time. Some tracks that stand out (even though they are all good) are 'The Dark Castle in the Deep Forest', 'Taakeslottet' and 'Dark Medieval Times'. I think Dark Medieval Times is slightly better than The Shadowthrone - their next album-; It's more original, raw and dark. 10/10

The first in a string of brilliant releases from Norway's Satyricon,Dark medieval times, their debut full length, shows a monumental band in the making. This album mixes beautiful somewhat melancholic black metal with a folk feel. The music,as with most black metal,is relatively simplistic riff based, with synths,Frost's basic yet precise and effective drumming, topped with Satyr's terrifying screech, excellent songwriting. This along with _The Shadowthrone_ and _Nemesis Divina_ are true masterpieces and should not be overlooked...

Highly recommended for those who crave a fix of second wave black metal in its purest form...
