OK, men, if you say that this LP is a bullshit, you'll find the enemy in my appearance. And, to tell you frankly, I'm not a small guy - 188 cm tall & 88 kg weight.
Nevertheless, I think that this is the best SEPULTURA release up-to-date. This is the first mixture of PURE thrash with tribal music, rhythms, etc. Nobody did this before, and nobody will do this in future - I mean such great mixture.
The best of the best songs are Roots, Cut-Throat, Straighthate, Lookaway (maybe you know that this song was re-recorded by SLIPKNOT - not a mack, but just average level). This is the best release of Max Cavalera before his leaving the band - thank you for such end !
Buy this album and have fun.

too much bullshitting with gay bongo-drums and other indian-shit, some songs still rocks, like dusted etc.

This album blows goats. After Arise, Sepultura were dead. Chaos A.D. was nothing but a turd in the toilet, and this is even worse.

This album i strongly believe that is a metal monument that can easily take a 10/10. The riff machine called Adreas Kisser make you bang your head endlessly,Igor's drums blast!!,excellent production by Colin Richardson and this is also the last album with Max on the vocals-guitar. It was an influence for the new-metal bands. I want you to check Slipknot's first album and you will find at least 4 stolen main riffs from Roots.I hope Igor and Max be together again in Sepultura and forget the past problems.

Then slipknot must suck too. Why would anyone buy this?...oh yeah , I did... but that was before I heard it. If I don't have anything nice to say I usually don't say anything at all (no bad votes either, otherwise I'd have to give this a zero), but this was too disappointing. I'm glad I got rid of it so long ago.

OK. AVOID this album. It's bad. Why is it bad? It's repetitive, boring, vocals are bad (I don't expect Mario Lanza but even a death-grunt should have SOME quality), all tracks are too slow, there's just no single "spark" on the entire album. I didn't sell this one - I actually threw it away, but not before having smashed it to pieces trying to put at least put SOME metal-spirit into it.

To quote Maddox from the best page in the universe "ding, ding! here comes the shit mobile!". Wow this album blows donkey cock. No wonder Max left the band this fucking sucks. It's new metal garbage. Oh wait, Max's band after this, Soul Fly, was new metal garbage too! I guess everyone in the band must have been eating large doses of pure shit before making this album. I feel real bad for anyone who went out and paid more than $1 for this.

Well, I'll just have to defend this record.
It seems to be very common on this site to condemn artists as being 'sellouts' whenever they choose to leave the trodden paths, the small confines of their originally chosen genre. Fuck that.
In my opinion any artist who is afraid to change style, just to play safe with his traditional fanbase, is the real sellout. Some people evolve. (Some obviously don't.)

ROOTS was, for a time, my favourite album. And even if I only rarely listen to it, these days, I still think it is a masterpiece.
It may not be the fastest or most evil record out there. It doesn't try to be. Also, it is - musically and lyrically - a simple record. And it's supposed to be. Most of the songs on this album are very straight and groovy as shit. The spontaneous sounding outbursts of anger are strengthend by the added percussion.
ROOTS is the essence of pure aggression and anger about the fucked up state of Brazil and the world. It speaks, rather growls, straight from the stomach, straght from the heart.
And in this sense it is just so much more "true" than every record from any band could be, who are afraid to listen to their hearts, who just listen to their heads and closed-minded fanbase about what "true metal" is supposed to be.
I know that a lot of what is called 'NuMetal' sounds like this record, most of which I think is incredibly boring. But I can't blame Sepultura for that.
