the two versions of the tristania demos are possibly the best albums in gothic metal to date. the sonic depth is just brilliant. the layering of the vocals and the symphony instruments creates such an amazing sound, and the guitars are just sickly thin. the compilation is perfect. after these albums, they re-recorded "midwintertears" and "pale enchantress" for widow's weeds, but the widow's weeds versions will never add up to the originals. the addition of echo effects to the beast vocals in the widow's weeds remakes just take away the gutteral growl that was so prominent in the original. this is the original tristania. this is the best tristania.
