As much as I love Agalloch they have tended to confuse/irritate me lately. Their previous two releases have featured remixes of old songs and this split with Nest is no different. I wouldn’t be so disappointed if they had made a radical overhaul of the track in question (they have remixed Hallways of Enchanted Ebony from Pale Folklore) as they did with The Lodge (dismantled) but all we get here is an acoustic guitar playing melodies over the same basic song with some wind and violin thrown in. Come on Agalloch stop pissing around with your EPs/Splits/singles/remixes and produce another full length album of your original brand of melancholic dirges. | On the flip side, this is my first encounter with Nest. Their contribution ‘last vestige of old joy’ draws many comparisons with Agalloch. Acoustic guitar, keyboards and a chilly narrative takes you on a journey over pastoral landscapes to mountainous paths. I’ll look forward to their full length. Review by: zephirus
