I'd say this is one of the best death metal albums out there. Definately stands above anything else done by At The Gates. Get this album, you won't be dissapointed.

That's the last At The Gates album. It features their second video Blinded By Fear. Incredible melodic death metal. I just can't say which song I like the best. The first one really makes you wanna thrash stuff. Very technical piece of art, and still being technical. At The Gates split up without having a bad album.

At The Gates decided to call it a day when they were at the top of their game, which many bands don't seem to get (i.e. Hypocrisy, Edge of Sanity, etc).

With "Slaughter of the Soul", ATG brought the still-in-its-infancy Swedish Death/Thrash Gothenburg sound to the forefront of the extreme metal industry (a sound that has been incorporated by bands all over the world in various genres). IMHO, it is the crowning achievement of the early gothenburg bands (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Eucharist, etc.)

A completely unrelenting release that ranks up with thrash classics such as Slayer's "Reign in Blood" and Metallica's "Master of Puppets", this album is really that good. If you are into melodic death/thrash metal at all, you should own this album already.

10/10

Slaughter of the Soul, by itself, is one of the greatest death metal albuns had ever been made. Add to it more demotracks transform this album in an exceptional document of the history of heavy metal! Slaughter with no doubt is At the Gates best album, and a wonderful bend between death and thrash metal. One of the most important albuns ever made in Swedish Metal!
The fast and precise guitars of Andres Bjorler and Martin Larsson and the demolition "kitchen" (drums by Adrian Erlandsson and bass guitar by Jonas Bjorler) simple kick you right in the head! Thomas Lindberg keep screaming right in you ears, rageous and merciless. This is one of the most dangerous line up ever united!!!
Slaughter of the Soul is a classic! get your ass out of its chair and go bang your heads, folks!

Slaughter of the Soul, by itself, is one of the greatest death metal albuns had ever been made in Sweden. Add to it more demotracks and covers, and you transform this album in an exceptional document of the history of heavy metal! Slaughter of the Soul, with no doubt is At the Gates best album, and a wonderful bend between death and thrash metal. Unfortunatly the last album of the band that is one of the rare cases of a band that end in his best release.
The fast and precise guitars of Andres Bjorler and Martin Larsson and the demolition "kitchen" (drums by Adrian Erlandsson and bass guitar by Jonas Bjorler) simple kick you right in the head! Slaughter of the Soul is a classic, and even today, almost 10 years later, sounds like a actual Heavy Metal play! Get your asses out of these chairs and go bang your heads, folks! Remember that these guys make part of the small group (that has become a large group) of the founders of Gotemburg Metal Scene – In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy... Just to talk about them...

Perhaps the best album of all time. In any genre of music, ever. The songwriting is perfect, there are exactly zero filler songs, and the lyrical content absolutely blows away any other Swedish act of the time, and that's saying something. The lyrics follow the path of an individual's decay and descent into death, tracking man's psychological downfall in the manner of a Greek tragedy, except with the mind-crushingly brutal screams of Tomas Lindberg. The lyrical content seamlessly blends social commentary, psychological investigations, insightful quotes, and hellish imagery into the most hard-hitting yet intelligent writing I've ever encountered.

Even beyond the lyrics, there is the perfectly executed guitarwork goes from pounding a wall of sound at you to buzzsaw riffs to flight-of-fancy solos to even acoustic parts. The timing is perfect, everything is balanced out so it doesn't seem like they are repeating themselves every single song. Even Lindberg's voice is different from song to song, which creates a different sort of mood across the album depending on which song you listen to. The drumming is just like the guitar playing in that it's just so solid and tight and precise. No one instrument stands out, however; there are no blazing fast Jimmy Page-style solos or insane thrash drumming a la Dave Lombardo, but the fact that EVERYTHING is so incredibly top-notch that nothing really can stand out as better than anything else. Let this album and the lyrics sink into your very soul before it gets torn the fuck apart.

A very technical and well put together piece of music. "Need", "Slaughter of the Soul" and "Cold" really highlight the bands skill. Buy or die. 9/10!
