This is the record that change my view about music and sorrow. The first tones from the cello and violin that turn into raw guitars and drums made me clear that ATG THE metal band that I always searched. Every song on this record is a classic piece. "The Swarm" with those hearthaching but brutal melodies, "Terminal S.D." the perfect mixture of hate and sorrow with the most beutiful huitar solo that I ever heard. The acoustic "And The World Returned" with its universe of grief. The most beautiful "Forever Blind", for this I can find words. And the slow "The Beautiful Wound" makes everyone clear that this melodic death metal is not the same with IN FLAMES and Co. At The Gates is a genial mixture of doom(in the vein of early Anathema), thrash, atmospheric, progressive, heavy metal approached from the direction of death metal. | ...and I haven't told anything yet about the lyrics and the rawest vocalwork ever heard in extreme metal. "Oh, set me free! Crucify life itself..." Review by: casketgarden666 This album starts with cello playing a very nice melody, and after the first loop it transforms into electric guitars without disturbing the ear. First song consists of many variations of the melody in the beginning. Simply kicks ass. 2nd song, the title track is also wonderful. Not as impressive as the first one in the beginning, after 2 or 3 spins, you realize that it is as ggod as the first one. 3rd one is an experiment of composing by the swedish boys with acoustic guitars and again cello. Nice music. 4th and 6th ones are in the vein of the 2nd song terminal spirit disease. 5th one is a bit slower than the others in tempo but yet heavy. All these 6 songs are wonderful. The last 3 songs are live versions of the older ones. The recording quality of these songs are nice enough, but the clean vocals on the burning darkness is a bit gay, i couldn't reason it, in the studio version it is really nice. 9/10. Buy it. A Good Album! Review by: thelahunginjeet
