This is definitely one of Opera IX's best! I would imagine most would see it as a return to form as most didn’t like Maleventum (I personally didn’t have any problem with that album and recovered from the loss of Cadaveria after a few listens) but Anphisbena has real potential and so far could well be their best effort! The vocals have improved and there is a sharper black metal sound present with superb keyboard work dancing along the harsh riffs that altogether blaze along like a valiant knight on horseback toward his enemy! The album henceforth yields allot of musical diversity delving slightly more into folk (ala Ragnarok UK) utilising different instruments like violins and the odd bit of clean female vocals are there to add another beautiful layer. This album has so much to offer and comes across more ‘mature’, deeper and richer than their previous outings - not that they were bad- but this album tops them all!! | Review by: Gavius
