An Album of dark slow brooding metal, like no other. The songs are long and at times, mesmerizing to the point of hypnosis. Despair is a key ingredient, not only in the name of this band, but also the music. Leaves your mind in that state, despair. Sorrowful and mindbending.Haunting female vocals, actually not vocals but more like hymns and chants. Flutes, synthesizers, technically inspired, you get the idea. Very depressing, and very similar to the band Unholy in their snail like pace. If your thinking of commiting suicide, by all means, make this album your last request that you want to listen to. For my part, I try not to ever get this forlorned. I'm not saying that this is a bad album, to the contrary. It is an outstanding vision of slow melodic doom. Warning! Listen before buying. This is definatly not for everyone. A real Lost Souls classic!

This is a very bleak doom album.
the atmosphere gained here is very depressed, and dark.
much much darker than stuff like Anathema, for example..
it consists mostly of looped drowning-riffs, and each song is quite long - this is done ok, everything is very down and slow here, yet not quite haunting as it may also be.
overall a nice release, nothing to be so amazed - it is very very slow and, again, very dark - yet lacks that other thing.

At last I have found an album that makes me feel like I'm home. Not my real home with my family but more like the conscience of a place I belong to. This album is truly a voyage through a soft and voluptous darkness of feelings and wounded souls. If there is music for the wandering souls of the dead, this is what they hear !

This is really harsh doom metal. Maybe a little to harsh for some people. All the songs on this album are super depressive. And the male vocal is extremely deep and murky. There is also a backup female vocal. However she just sings the same vole all the time, so it feels more like it's a sample they put in, in stead of an actual back-up singer. If I were to compare this to anything I would say that you could in some ways compare it to Nortt's music. Although Nortt is still more harsh than this.
7/10

Forget everything you know, don't even try to compare this sound to anything you've been through before... Just lie down and drown into the pain and suffering this album brings you... I've owned it for years and spent hours exploring it... Shape is a world of its own, put your headphones on and dive into it, forget about your life, your family and stuff, just feel the warm blood pouring from your veins and leave...

«Shades of» is hymn to sadness, to mourning, to a diferent type of beauty that can be only found in the despair of living. Only a few can understand this type of beauty and Shape of Dispair is this album had the ability to do that in the most superb way, with truly mastery.
Superb
