One of the dumbest black metal albums. It's good for them to add folk elements for their music, but Ashen Light repeated their stupid boring folk riff over and over...and the boring folk riff really makes me sick !!!! The only listenable track should be track 8, and it gives some points for this unholy shit....

"Pesn' Velesa" (Song of Veles)

Now finally I had an opportunity to hear and maybe even to compare our native,home-made (if I can say so) pagan-black
metal (or how is it called now?).The first album.Well, although for me quality of the record never played the big and
influencive role in deciding wether I like or dislike the album, song, whatever,I sould say the quality of this record is quite good for the first album.
Talking about the booklet I must say it's a pity I haven't seen it,haven't hold it in my arms, coz got it in mp3 together with
many other albums (yep, helping the audio-pirats to make money in so dishonest way). And that's why I can say nothing
about it:wether it is brilliant, just good and well-made or tasteless and ugly.I can say some words about the main page of booklet--well..not bad,not bad..as usual hardly understandable title-name with a pentagram and a goat head and some forest (I've seen three main pages--2 with forests,1 with a band pic. However,"forest" ones are much more better) *sigh*..ok.let us turn the sound on!So,now the main thing--the plot, the music and lyrics. As I noticed the last months many people say russian suits BM very well.Yeah.I have to admit it does!and here I feel myself priveleged--I can understand the message of the lyrics.what is good about them--no blood, master satan, corpses, crucified children and virgins burried alive after been sodomized 666 times--to sum it up,the things mostly exploited by an average BM band(pagan, nazi, whatever!) which makes it sound like some grindcore. And let anyone around say they have only one riff being repeated over and over. Well, that's true and sometimes it may sound a little bit boring if you pay much attention to that.On the other hand,it seems the genre is not the one to show all the "technic" you got during the long years with the giutar in your hands. It is much more ment to be atmospheric than technically perfectly played.Besides sometimes too much attention is payed to "playing right and complicated" which leaves almost nothing to feelings, sense, whole mood of the song, conception of the album. That's why talking about atmosphere it is pretty good..well,I've heard much better (like an example--Nokturnal Mortum, with whom Ashen Light are quite often compared),but we shouldn't forget this is their first album.
According to the names of the songs the whole album is like a fairy-tale is being told:The rebirth,Princess from the
woods,Song of Veles,The second birth,The last battle,Ashen light..Distorted guitars go well together with acoustic ones
and all this goes together with synth pipes. However ,it can be understood why is it hard to appraise this work at its true
worth--maybe people are not familiar with russian lands--endless forests, hills, fields (what a banal examples I gave..hehe)-everything that (how it seems) inspires the musicians, the music is full of this special kind of spirit, the russian spirit and the folk tunes are a fine addition..well..maybe even not addition, they may be rather considered as one of the main parts. The synth create the needed atmosphere.Talking about the vocals:nice we have here different types of them. The thing I disliked was the one that in a song (Ros) the guy tells the words too fast,unclear..those words can be said much more proud.Even the screaming vocals don't make the songs worse, they bring their own mood, which makes a contribution to the main composition--and as a result we have maybe a little bit too "merry" sometimes but in general a nice album--Song of Veles.

P.S. Too bad I had the opportunity to see the band pic..that spoiled my impression a little bit--corpsepaited ridiculous
faces,or may be I should say ridiculously corpsepainted faces..anyway,nothing innovative.
