"get it or die" - Quote from sad spirit, but really just listen to the album, excellent

Burzum, the infamous project of the equally infamous Count Grishnackh (Varg Vikerenes) had the distinction of never producing two albums that sound alike. "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss," however, marks the beginning of the true metamorphosis of Burzum. Before this album (whose title translates as "When The Light Takes/Took Us") Burzum had produced some ambient but emotionally-charged second generation black metal that was popular in the same circles as Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Immortal. However, with "HLTO," the musical direction of Burzum shifted to an electronically-influenced form of "dark" metal (I hesitate to refer to it as "black"). The album, containing only four tracks, is an intellectual experience that is not meant to be taken lightly. Listening to HLTO as background music is virtually impossible, and not listening to the album in its entirety should be punishable by death. The overall conceptual picture is Vikernes' desire to rid the Aryan/Nordic people of the alien influences of Judeo-Christianity that have brought about their decline. The song titles are intrinsically linked to this idea. Det Som Engang Var (What Was Once), Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen (Into The Castle Of Dreams), and Tomhet (Emptiness) are meant to be read as returning the Aryans to "What Once Was before The Light Took Us Into The Castle Of Dreams and into Emptiness." Does Hvis Lyset Tar Oss accomplish this task? Are we delivered thus from the light of ignorance and into the dark of unity and enlightenment? Probably not, but for a quality album of semi-epic proportions, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss is one of your best bets. As Vikernes' last out-of-prison testament, its historical value is worth noting as well.

THE FIRST SONG IS ABSOLUT KILLING!!!!!!! ...and the others too.......the cover-art is perfect like from "Filosofem". The paintings from Theodor Kittelsen are supreme nordic art!:
Fattigmannen, 1894-95 (The Pauper) is the one from "Hvis lyset tar oss".....Hailz to Mother North!

Ahhh, here we are...Surely, the most inspiring record in the history of norwegian black metal, ever.Varg builds a castle where madness, loneliness and despair lie. The vocals are more than crazy, the music creates an unbelievable sense of confusion, for the nowadays world, and bravery, bringing into mind the fine sagas if the norsemen. Finally, the forth song, "Tomhet" is the first ambient song written in the metal scene. Try to find such a dark feeling in any song...only very few will you find. This record, having gained untold publicity by the murder of Euronymous, brought the world a step closer to black metal's nightmare. Note the excellent art by T.S.Kittelsen and also the dedication of the record to Fenriz and Demonaz.

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

Burzum. This is the word that comes in mind (along with MayheM) when somebody asks about early 90's black metal elite. "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" is an album which also belongs to the same genre.

The music itself is brillianly primitive and as atmospheric as EmperoR's "In the Nightside Eclipse", but only in a different way. The first one, "Det Som en Gang Var", and the last one, "Tomhet", possesses the atmosphere which gives an image about the situations in Norway during the times when Euronymous was killed.

The first thing I was interested in Burzum was the fame which Varg has now, and I had to lay my hands off to some record of his, in this case "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss". The thing which bothers me in this album doesn't exist. It's perfect, even the vocalwork is enjoyable - Varg sounds like a dying dog in a huge amount of pain! Thumbs up!

Rating: 5 out of 5

Best Black Metal album!Best Black Metal song=Ýnn i Slottet fra Droemmen.

Review by: Beyto

This is Burzum's finest album.
the first song is the best of the four (which you will notice quite easily on first listen), the rest will take some time to get into, though the atmosphere and sound will do the entertain-job alone, if your into it.
the lyrics are so damn stupid, and who cares.
the vocals are so horid and frightening, just compare it to filosofem (and youll find out how shit filosofem is)
anyway this bozo Varg pulled out some heavy thing here.
a classic.

One of the best True Unholy Misanthropic Black Metal album forever, maybe only FILOSOFEM is better, but maybe not, I do not know... I do not care about Varg, I hate his visions on this world, but I LOVE HIS MUSIC. It is masterpiece, it is so wonderful and misanthropic... As many considers HVIS LYSET TAR OSS is the best song. Without it this album wasn't be worth 20 percent of current state. This album rules- nothing to add.

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss was the last burzum album i truly enjoyed. The songs are:

Det Som En Gang Var - Most people say this is the best burzum song...well, in my opinion is far from that. The song starts with a synth intro then very repetitive guitar riffing and some keyboards follow by for almost 15 min. The song gets boring after listening to it for the 3rd or 4th time, at least for me it did. Varg tries too hard to get some kind of emotional reaction on the listener, for me it didn't for some people it will. I really like Varg's screams on the last part of the song so i will give it 8/10

Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - I really like this song, This song has tremendous riffing, really fast drums and a haunting bass sound, no keyboards on this track. It is a deep, cold and dark song. 9/10

Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen - This is my favourite track in the album. It just has the right feeling, a nice guitar work and impressive keyboards. 9.5/10

Tomhet - This is an instrumental kind of ambient synth song. I really like it except for the part of the cheesy viking melody. 8/10

I really enjoyed this album, unlike it's predecessors. It is a masterpiece of black metal with a lot of artistic value. It deserves a 9/10.

Det Som Engang Var is a great song but not the best of the album I think. I like Inn I Slottet Fra Droemmen more. I just cannot understand why people like Tomhet so much. It is just a boring song for me which is too long.

This is my favorite black metal album to date! I'm tired of hearing about Vargs personal beliefs and who agrees or disagrees with them. His music kicks ass.

This my personal ideas...Ýnn i slottet fra droemmen and Mayhem-Freezing Moon.. Best songs of all Black Metal... Others only a copy or rip off! Freedom to VARG....R.Ý.P.-DEAD!

I refuse to say too much about this album. Why? Because ordinary mortal words can only offend it but never reach its true worth and the mystic deep. You will never find any other album which has such an intense atmosphere. This is realy sad, dark and depressive. Excellent lyrics and excellent cover artwork from Theodor Kittelsen.

"Hvis lyset tar oss" is undoubtedly the most astonishing musical work I have ever encountered. Evoking incredible feelings of sadness, desperation and drama, "Hvis lyset tar oss" is a life-altering album- stunning, powerful and emotional. For nearly ten years this has been without question my favourite musical work- desperately sad, utterly dark, and crushingly powerful.

Percect masterpiece! The first track is a life in its place, what else can you expect from a metal album?! It conceptualize black metal music.

This album just kills, it kills too damn much.
I love Varg Vikernes (even being an asshole with some of his thoughts and convictions) and his music..
All the 4 tracks are outstanding, and if you want to relax..just listen to the Tomhet song, you will not regret.
10/10

I learned of Burzum from his use of the Tolkien elements. Curious, I had to buy the most recommended CDs (hlto and dsev). I also have interest in Norse heritage (being German by blood) and I must say this CD evokes powerful feelings, and is an impressive piece of work. I am no fan of "black metal" but this is definitely one of my most prized albums (of close to 300, of many musical styles). Since buying it over a year ago, I still listen to it often (maybe too much!) Terrifying and beautiful, I can feel the pure hatred and rage, the call to burn and return to what once was...

Most people see Filosofem as his masterpiece, listen to this album and be proven wrong

This is a masterpiece , the use of keyboards make this production very ambient , also very tragic ; the count sets the ground for a story of a tragic hero who falls in pain , agony and death ( not lyricaly but musicaly speaking ).A must .

The first track on here is the most epic track and by far the best Burzum track ever created. This is a great addition to any Burzum collection. Very dark and depressing but not so overbearing as their first release.

Review by: shanewick

This certainly the best black metal album for me. The stark simplicity, the distorted sound, the use of synth create a dark- gloomy atmosphere. I haven't an album with such a simple sound but profound atmosphere and ambience.

Hail Burzum
