True Norwegian Black Metal.

Great.

Review by: Schaambaard

Sort Vokter, -which translates into “Black Guard”-, was a one time, and a one time only project, Ildjarn did not really like being in Sort Vokter because too many compromises had to be made (musicly). However, substantiated rumours claim that Sort Vokter did record (but never released) a demo prior to “Folkloric Necro Metal”.

Although they are not mentioned anywhere on the album, Sort Vokter was a 4-piece collaberation between Ildjarn, Tvigygre, Heiinghund & long time partner in crime Nidhogg.
- With whom Ildjarn had recorded the 1993 "Norse" 7”, the 1995 "Svartfråd" EP and the 2002 “Hardangervidda” (part I & II) releases (they were actually recorded in 1997 but only finished & released in 2002).-

The concept of the album seems to be revolving around nature, the track order & track names are very well chosen cause they fit the music & meaning very well.

A good example of what I mean you'll find in the instrumental track #3 "Grålysning" [Dawn - freely translated], it starts out very distant and builds it self up repeating the riff over & over & over again with the keyboard part very slowly but gradually becoming more & more present and slowly taking over the song till there is only the keyboard. The keyboard in this song represents the (rising)sun and that it becomes the only instrument that's being played means that sun has rissen fully.

The album then contiunes slowly building up to the climax "Hatefulle Tanker ui i Natten" [Hatefull thoughts out (of) the night - freely translated] (6th song on the cd thus exactly in the middle). This song has some of the most inhuman screams that I have ever heard, it’s sending shivers down my spine everytime I hear it. Just like the whole album does!

And then contiues slowly towords the 10th & last track which is a long & painfully (in a positive way) keyboard song.

The beautifull minimalistic artwork fits the concept & sound of the cd very well. The lyrics are not printed in the booklet (neither are the names of the bandmembers or where this album was recorded), but there not really lyrics anyway. They are sort of words that fit and enhance & clarify the meaning of the song & song titles. The blueish pictures of the trees capture the emotion of the music.

This is not a album you listen to when you are with someone, this for when you are alone in the dark. Also it's not something you listen songs of, you listen the whole album at a high volume. The first few times you listen to it you might find it bizar / weird & strange but as you listen to it more & more you'll proably realize how beautifull it actually is. There is something in this music that makes you listen to it over & over again. This is my personal all time favourite album and the most impressive thing that I have ever heard. The mood & atmoshpere of this disc can not be put into words, combining violence and tranquillity. This is not Black Metal, this is Black(/blue) Ambient!

To conclude this review; There are some untrue rumours spread around about Sort Vokter, the most annoying & most untrue one is the one saying that Sort Vokter is a NSBM project. This is not the case, allthough litteraly the band consits out of 4 skinheads (they are all bald, (have no hair on there head)), the backcover of the artwork clearly states "Sort Vokter represent no political or Ideological views.".
So, should you see it mentioned as a NSBM band or project or any other way pointed out as something to do with National Socialism Black Metal, you know they are wrong and only want to cash in on the NSBM-hype that is currently making possers and wanna-be, trendkiddies rich.

Great Album! For all us True-Black Metallers, raw, scratchy, lo-fi black metal in its purest form. It's so Kvlt that the recording is so that sound only comes out of one speaker (im not kidding). Crappy Recording, yes, but it adds to the music... 04 - Fra Kilden Til Tjernet is a fucking awesome song.

This project is connected with other norwegian project named Ildjarn
which split-up some time ago. Ildjarn was really very raw black metal act even more raw and simplistic then Darkthrone and this album is the same as Ildjarn.
Only one thing differ - it is production which is far better. Album contain some nice atmospheric intros and interludes but the rest is black metal in pure form, real sonic attack.
Atmosphere of the album is excellent - landscapes, mountains, north...
I think you know what I mean.
For fans of pure black metal high recommend.

This music have the real "norwegian black metal atmosphere" (in my opinion invented in the 80's,by Quorton, from Sweden..) no drum-ego-trips,guitar-wanking,or annoying synthezisers. Just pure hate, darkness, with a slight touch of the nature of the land of vikings.(r.i.p.)
if you are fed up with bands with perfect sound, fantastic drummer, but no soul ,-then you might find something special here. ..Blodgulp..
