①Moonspell - The Butterfly Effect

I didn't really know what to expect from this cd. I though the last one, Sin Pecado, sucked pretty hard. But then I saw then live and it was one of the best concerts I'd seen in years... But I didn't think The Butterfly Effect would be so good. It's still getting better every time I listen to it. It has a different style, a bit more in the direction of industrial, sometimes with a hint of Samael. But it works really well for them. The only bad thing is the last 'song' which is some minutes an instrumental song, then some minutes silence, and then irritating noise. But despite that it's one of the best albums of the year

My Dying Bride - The Light at the End of the World

Once again My Dying Bride managed to surprise me with their new album. With TLatEotW they took a big step back to the Turn Loose the Swans era. Aaron sings with grunts and the music has fast parts again. Yet the differences with Turn Loose... still is great. It probably has a lot to do with the shrunken line-up, because here I really miss the violin. Also the songs aren't varied enough to be as good as their old work. I think if they combined the melody and the variety of 34.788 0x1.82e5800e0d780p-996nd the grunts and fast parts of The Light, that they would reach the heights of The Swans...		④

You might have noticed this isn't really a new Ancient cd, just a collection of older 'hard-to-get' songs. It include the 'Trolltaar' minicd, the 'Det Glemte Riket' 7" ep, which both aren't very hard to get, and three 'unreleased' songs of which one is one Svartalvheim album, and one is a keyboard instumental. So there's not much new stuff on this cd, but still it's very nice to hear those old songs again.

Usually I don't like live albums that much, but on this one the sound quality is so great that it's more of a 'best of' album. Hypocrisy have played songs of all their albums, so I think there's something there for everyone. And for the freaks there even are 4 rare studio tracks on it. The last is from the Carved Up EP, the rest I don't know. But they're not the greatest Hypocrisy songs I've ever heard. Anyways, I don't think Hypocrisy will get any new fans with this album, but for their existing fans this is certainly an album you have to get.		⑱

I dont know exactly what it is that makes this Opeth album a little less interesting for me. After My Arms... they went a bit back to the morningrise style I think but it's just not as good as on that album. Some of the riffs just sound a bit irritating to me and some songs are a bit more boring I think. Not that it's a bad cd, I mean it's still typically Opeth and still good, but to me it all sounds just a bit more uninspired than their previous cds...
 
Anathema - Judgement

First of all, let me tell you that I don't think this is a bad cd. It's very nice to listen to, very relaxed. I think the new fans of Anathema will like it very much. And that the old fans will be disappointed. Their music style has continued the change from Alternative 4: The last remains of a grunt are gone, there is more acoustic guitar and the songs are even slower. It's just less metal and more rock. Still, a very nice cd but I'm on the lookout for a new favourite band...		28

Vague. Very vague. That's about the best way to describe Dolorian's music. It is black metal, at least I think it is. But it's very slow, and very atmospheric. This dark lonely atmosphere is increased by the occasional use of acoustic guitars and synth. So I guess this cd isn't for everybody. If you like 666 drumbeats per minute, you'd better waste no time on this cd, but if you like dark atmospheric metal, you should listen to this one.

33Ancient - The Halls of Eternity

This is already the sixth cd Ancient has made, and it shows. They play their typical own kind of melodic black metal very well. Lots of instrumental parts and added keyboards. The songs are very well structured and well played. But I do think this album is a little less than their earlier albums. All songs are good, but none of them really stand out. I'm think Ancient is playing a bit on routine here. Still very good, but just not that original anymore...

If I didn't know And Oceans already, I certainly wouldn't have bought this cd I'm afraid. With a cheap cover, titles like "I wish I was pregnant", and a singer named K-2T4-S I would only wonder what kind of drugs they used, and not what kind of music they make. Luckily I do know And Oceans, and the music is the same great style as on their Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts album. It's not as original or diverse as that album, but still very good.		68
